Company to Work with Physicians to Provide Clinical Services
October 1, 2004
Farmington, CT - Familymeds, Inc. today announced their intention to proactively inform their patients who take Vioxx that Merck, the manufacturer of Vioxx, has issued a voluntary recall of the medication. This decision comes in the wake of Merck’s release that Vioxx presents an increased risk for cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke.
Familymeds is one of the country’s leading operators of specialty pharmacies that provide exceptional clinical services to patients in a professional setting. The majority of Familymeds pharmacies are located in or near doctor’s offices, allowing for better health care for patients through the collaboration between physician and pharmacist.
The calls will be made to Familymeds’ patients within 24 to 48 hours of Merck’s recall notice. Patients will be given the option of having Familymeds call their prescribing physician to discuss discontinuing the use of Vioxx and possible alternative treatments.
"Familymeds’ mission is to provide the best possible clinical pharmacy services to our patients,” said Ed Mercadante, R. Ph., president and CEO of Familymeds. “This call program is in keeping with this mission."
Familymeds chose Silverlink, a Massachusetts-based company that specializes in providing proactive personalized communications for the healthcare industry. The company uses automated call technology with integrated response features.
"We've used Silverlink with great success to contact patients who are non-compliant with their prescription regimen,” said Jim Beaumariage, R. Ph., senior vice president field operations for Familymeds. “We believed that their technology and their experience in the healthcare industry gives us the best chance to immediately contact our patients with this potentially life-saving information."
